Our craft

The difference is in the detail

We are a team of dedicated joiners who believe hardwood should be worked with care and patience. From the first sketch to the final coat of finish, everything is made by hand in our workshop.

Solid hardwoods only

Responsibly sourced oak, walnut and ash, chosen for grain, strength and warmth.

Made to measure

Every project begins with a survey so each piece fits your space perfectly.

Traditional joinery

Time-honoured techniques paired with precision machinery for a flawless finish.

Built to last

Hand-finished and guaranteed, crafted to be enjoyed for generations.

The solid hardwood difference

100% solid hardwood, never veneered cores

A lot of “oak” joinery is really a wafer of veneer glued over MDF. It looks the part on day one — but it can only be finished once, and the man-made core shows the moment it's knocked or scratched. We build differently: solid timber, right through.

What we build with

Solid hardwood

  • Solid timber all the way through — not a thin veneer over board
  • Can be sanded back and re-finished years later, not replaced
  • Chips and knocks reveal more timber, never a grey MDF core
  • Real structural strength for treads, handrails and frames
  • Ages and mellows with your home instead of wearing out

What we don't

Veneered MDF core

  • A paper-thin hardwood face wrapped over MDF or chipboard
  • Sand through the veneer once and the piece is finished
  • Damaged edges expose a different-coloured man-made core
  • Relies on the board beneath for strength — not the timber
  • Swells and delaminates where moisture gets in

It costs a little more to build in solid hardwood — and it lasts generations longer. Get a free quote and feel the difference for yourself.

Bespoke staircases & joinery, answered

Where are you based and which areas do you cover?

Our workshop is at 382 Green Lane, Birmingham, B9 5DT. We design, make and install bespoke staircases, balustrades, pergolas and joinery across Birmingham, Solihull, the wider West Midlands and Warwickshire. We travel further afield for larger bespoke projects — just ask.

How long does a bespoke staircase take?

Most bespoke staircases take around 4–8 weeks from initial survey to installation, depending on the design, timber and finish. The stages are: free survey and measure, design and drawings for sign-off, hand manufacture in our workshop, then installation by our own fitters.

Do your staircases and balustrades meet UK Building Regulations?

Yes. Every staircase and balustrade we build is designed to meet Building Regulations Part K (protection from falling — including the 100mm sphere gap rule, going and rise, and handrail heights) and Part M where accessible access applies. Glass balustrades use toughened safety glass to the relevant standard.

What timber and finishes do you use?

We work in 100% solid hardwood — European oak, American walnut, ash and sapele — never veneered MDF cores. Pieces can be finished natural, oiled, lacquered or hardwax-oiled, and we can dye the timber for two-tone looks such as oak treads with darker-dyed risers. We will do the dyeing in our workshop, or supply the dye for you to finish yourself.

Can you renovate or re-clad my existing staircase?

Often, yes. Where the existing structure is sound we can over-clad it in solid hardwood — new treads, risers, handrails and spindles fitted over the original stairs. It transforms the look for less cost and disruption than a full rebuild, and is usually completed in a few days.

How much does a bespoke staircase or balustrade cost?

Every project is priced individually because cost depends on the design, size, timber and finish. After a free, no-obligation survey we provide a fixed written quote so there are no surprises. For DIY projects, ready-made stair parts and skirting are priced online in our shop.

Do you offer a free quote?

Yes. We offer a free, no-obligation survey and written quote for all bespoke work. Call us on 0121 751 1565 or request a quote online and we'll arrange a visit.
